{"id":34,"date":"2026-09-11T23:06:21","date_gmt":"2026-09-11T23:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/electjoe.org\/?post_type=ej_vision&#038;p=34"},"modified":"2026-09-11T23:06:21","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T23:06:21","slug":"extreme-heat-shade-walkability","status":"publish","type":"ej_vision","link":"https:\/\/electjoe.org\/?ej_vision=extreme-heat-shade-walkability","title":{"rendered":"Extreme Heat, Shade &#038; Walkability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A planning idea that works somewhere with mild summers may not work the same way in Desert Hot Springs.<\/p>\n<p>DHS 2040 therefore looks at pedestrian comfort alongside pedestrian infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>That means considering:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>shade<\/li>\n<li>distance<\/li>\n<li>street design<\/li>\n<li>building orientation<\/li>\n<li>trees and drought-tolerant landscaping<\/li>\n<li>bus stops<\/li>\n<li>rest areas<\/li>\n<li>crossings<\/li>\n<li>materials<\/li>\n<li>nighttime activity<\/li>\n<li>and summer temperatures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The question is not whether every part of DHS should become walkable in the same way.<\/p>\n<p>The question is where better pedestrian conditions would be useful, and what is required for people to actually use them.<\/p>\n<p>Existing public investment already reflects some of these issues.
